Anyone can come to Toulouse and have a truly memorable experience. However, if you are looking for the real Toulouse and want to know how it stands apart from other European cities, don't miss the following attractions.
Le Capitole: La Salle des Illustres and La Salle Henri Martin If you venture inside the impressive pink brick Hôtel de Ville you will not be disappointed. The elaborately decorated rooms will impress the weariest of tourists. Historical representation, a dreamy cherubed ceiling and imposing gilt framed depictions of La Garonne fill the grandiose rooms that looks over the Capitol. If you’re around on a Saturday, you’ll be witness to several weddings.
Saint Sernin You’ll be amazed at how they built this impressive Romanesque basilica between 1080 and 1120. The pink stone bell tower and tiered wedding cake exterior against a blue sky, make for an iconic photo of Toulouse.
Les Jacobins Not to be missed! This extremely central old monastery often used for romantic piano recitals is quite breathtaking. A beautiful interior as well as exterior; stained glass windows, central maze-like courtyard and giant stone ‘palm trees’- all just 5 minutes from Capitol.
St. Etienne A French national monument, this Roman Catholic cathedral sits on a relaxed square at the mouth of the antique quarter. Head up here for a coffee and take a peak inside at the exquisite stonework, the stained glass dating back to the 13th century and the faded Baroque tapestry.
Les Berges de La Garonne A visit to Toulouse would not be complete without a stroll along the river during the day or at night. Spot Toulouse’s oldest bridge Pont Neuf, the talented summer jugglers and the old Mortoir, le Dôme de la Grave, lit up after dark. Order a demi in Café des Artistes on la Daurade for the full Garonne experience.
Hôtel d’Assézat Tucked way between Esquirol and Pont Neuf, this splendid building can be easily missed from the street. Make sure you pop your head into the pubic courtyard and marvel at the architecture. During summer months, you can even take lunch while you take it all in
